What is a MOOC? Why should I take a MOOC? And why should I take this particular MOOC?

Read on to find out!

What is a MOOC?

massive open online course (MOOC ) is an online course aimed at unlimited participation and open access via the web. In addition to traditional course materials such as filmed lectures, readings, and problem sets, many MOOCs provide interactive user forums to support community interactions among students, professors, and teaching assistants.

Why take a MOOC?

  • MOOCs are an opportunity for personal and professional growth. If you want to learn new skills, or to deepen your knowledge in a given field, MOOCs are available across dozens of platforms, in topics that range from cooking and making music, to computer science and running a business.
  • They are provided by renowned educational institutions and professionals.
  • They’re usually free of charge (some courses charge for a certificate, but you can take the course for free if you’re in it for the knowledge rather than the credentials). All you need is a computer/device connected to the Internet.
  • You can study at your own pace. The lectures are pre-recorded, and you can go over the materials when you have the time. You can also join the MOOC forum community, to ask questions, or provide answers and share your experience with your MOOC-mates.

Why take this particular MOOC - Integrating Critical Thinking into the Exploration of Culture in an EFL Setting?

Because we’re adding value to it by turning it into a MOOC camp!

This means that alongside the online lectures, there will be weekly in-person meetings at the American Corner in Struga, facilitated by Zora Bushovska, MA (TESOL) English Language Advisor at the Bureau for the Development of Education. During these sessions, you will have the chance to go into deeper discussion over the course materials with your colleagues, conceptualize lesson plans and adapt them to your students and context.

For regular participation in these meetings, you will receive a certificate by the U.S. Embassy in Skopje, in addition to the certificate/badges earned upon successful completion of the course.
